Day 7 - Saastna, Estonia - Signs, signs, everywhere a sign.
Tony's View
This guy called Matt Hoying wrote a comment to Joan about whether I was reading signs to Joan. He knows that is super annoying to Joan, because it is annoying to his wife, Amanda, when he reads signs. We found that out when Joan and Amanda were both stating we do that. 😖😀. So I thought I would share just some of the signs I read today.
Look Joan, they have coffee and a bed 7.5km to the left
Joan, look they have a sign showing us where the grocery store is.
Hey Joan, we are entering a village . Cool part is that they have this sign every time we enter a village. Enough on signs, you are probably getting annoyed just like Joan does on the ride. 😂 Today was a great day, our first real bicycle ride. We went 47 miles. The last 10 miles gave us a test going against severe Baltic Sea north winds. We just stopped about every 3 miles to take a break.
This was very much the way today's ride looked like for the first 20 miles. Then we turned right and got on a very busy highway, which was pretty intense, even made my blood sugar go high.
I asked Joan to take a picture of this rain cloud. She said it was a rain cloud wanna be since there was 0% chance of rain. I said you don't want to make fun of that cloud jokingly. 😀 Well, the next thing you know, it started to sprinkle and we saw a bus stop ahead that had a cover. Rarely do we see bus stops in the middle of no where with a cover. We just got lucky. So we took cover and let the rain pass and let the road dry up a little bit.
While we waited for the roads to dry up, Joan decided to walk up the gravel road where she found some sheep buddies. Speaking of gravel roads, it reminds me of the roads in Indiana and Michigan. The main roads are paved and the side roads are gravel. Come to think about it, it couldn't be Indiana since the main roads are not full of potholes 😂 I threw that in there for Wade.
One of the places we decided to take a break.
At the last placed we stopped, a grocery store, before going into seclusion there was a coffee vending machine. I got a cappuccino and it was very good.
There was some good and funny art on the bales along the road. Even over here they are memorializing Ozzie Osborn. For us that were around when he started, it's still amazing to me that people immortalize him.
This is our home for the night way out in the middle of nowhere but it is quant and beautiful. A great find if I have to say myself.
Joan's Extras
Yes, this cute cabin was a GREAT find especially after the host suggested we use Waze instead of Google maps to find it since it is so remote. It's somewhat close to the Baltic Sea. Tony normally memorizes about every road when he plans the route in street view, but this time was a little scary. After 45 miles of head winds, we went down a gravel road, turned on another smaller gravel road, then turned on a skinny two tire path into the buggy woods. It dead ended into someone's farm. Tony is walking around their farm looking for someone or phone service and an older gentleman comes out of a smaller house. He only spoke Estonian and could not identify the picture of the cottage. My thoughts went to, "I do not want to camp out in this buggy woods for the night." We started back on the path and tried several gravel roads until Tony got service and could pin the location. Amen!
We passed some other long distance cyclists today. Lots fewer of them around here than on our previous European rides.
Saw another cute little fox today sitting in the parking lot of a company as we left Haapsalu. It crouched down like a cat when it saw us riding by.
Also, saw our first cornfield since most fields are hay for livestock.
So glad that Joan isn't being deprived of the wonderful knowledge the signs are portraying but can't speak for themselves to her! And glad to hear the bike trip has finally turned into that!
ReplyDeleteAs always, we are enjoying your blog! You guys are so brave! Gary and Beep
ReplyDeleteYep, if you can’t swim in the potholes there, the roads are better than in Indiana! Great timing on the comment though because signs just went up in our neighborhood that our roads will be repaved soon!
ReplyDeleteWe are keeping up with you guys, reading, not riding 😀. Another true adventure.
