Day 8 - Helmküla, Estonia - A Chance of Rain

Joan's View

The weather forecast kept changing. It rained in the morning, stopped, but looked like more was coming so we left around 10:00 with only 26 miles to our next Airbnb. I was prepared. Thankfully, the weather shifted again and we stayed dry.

Broke our my new rain poncho

We only stopped a few times as the coffee started to go through Tony. The sights today were mostly trees and fields with hay bundles. We did see and hear this field covered with what we think are cranes. They sounded like geese, but flew away from us when we got close.

There was one restaurant that might have been open around noon, but we were there around 11:30, so we decided to press on considering the chance of rain. We arrived at our stop for the night a little early and chilled on the deck while the owners finished prepping the place.
We had the option to ride 3 miles from here to a possible restaurant, but we are both tired (we rode into the wind again today), so we watched some TV and rested. The host gave us some fresh tomatoes and cucumbers from their green house, similar to the ones the host gave us yesterday.  So many kind people in this world!

Dinner is those fresh veggies and a freeze dried chicken teriyaki packet from Bidfta. The picture of the expiration date is for Cara, Wade & Marla. You can ask them about it some time. 😃
Also, yesterday was a national holiday in Estonia.
Estonia celebrates the Day of Restoration of Independence on August 20th, which commemorates the country regaining its independence in 1991 after Soviet occupation. If there were any festivities, we missed them because we have been in remote areas the last few days.

Tony's Extras

We got up this morning to a full pot of coffee. I braved the rain, went out and picked about 20 plums for breakfast. Last night, I picked 2 apples and plums for my snack. They were so good. I found them while playing their one hole frisbee golf course. There were frisbees in the basket. I was the star on that course, mainly due to being the only one on it😊.

I realized it has been a while since we ate a real meal, besides peanut butter and jelly. It made that freeze dried meal taste gourmet.

Tomorrow we head into a bigger city, Parnu, Estonia. Definitely eat at some restaurants and maybe get my first ice cream cone.👍

Except for some wind shifting against us, the weather has been cooperative, still dry. The temperature was awesome today, in the mid 50's. Perfect for bicycling riding, even for my bicycle training partner, Jerry Vanderhorst.

In case you are not reading people's comments to our blog, which we love your participation, my ex-friend Dan let us know more about the beer tap earlier in the blog. They are called "Czech side pull faucets" - originally created to pour Czech Pilsner. I knew I could count on him, a beer genius.

  1. This entire time I've been reading these updates I've been thinking, "Is there no ice cream in Estonia?" Best of luck finding some, Tony!

  4. Apparently the cranes you saw are Common Cranes. They look similar to our sandhill cranes but the coloration on the head is a little different. MaryR
