Day 8 Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany - Beautiful Rheinfall and the Heat
Tony's View
I really struggled sleeping last night and finally went into the yurt around 1:00am. It was so hot that I started sweating a puddle at my head. It was so uncomfortable that I switched to the end of the bed, but my feet didn't like the puddle either. I decided to go outside with the bugs, Eventually, I went inside to sleep. The lack of sleep and sweating 24 hours of the day is starting to get to me. Makes we really appreciate A/C. We started this morning with a breakfast in our yurt on the family farm. It had rained overnight so outside things were wet. Lots of fresh eggs and milk products from our bordering animals outside of the yurt were part of our breakfast - fresh milk, yogurt, eggs, homemade jam.We are now heading into some German style small village with an entrance through a bell tower with a clock tunnel into the downtown. These are two different views.Another covered bridge below across the Rhine going from one country to another, Switzerland to Germany. We only got the end because my phone wasn't cooperating with Joan. However, you get the idea.
We made it to the Rheinfall which is Europe's Niagra Falls. It even has two different countries on each side. It was tough to get to with steep hills, but it was worth it. Check out these photos.
It was so hot I went to the drinking fountain to dip my head into the basin. It felt so good. We did cross the location where we were heading to the Danube from Zurich and thought we would get a picture. We went a little north of here and headed east down the Danube. You can check that out by looking at that on our previous blog postings from our trip before this one.
Looking forward to traveling in 3 countries tomorrow, Germany, Switzerland and France. How ever, it is supposed to be the hottest day yet with temperatures at 98 degrees and heat index of 107 just like Shelby County. If you want to know what it feels like for us, I suggest back home tomorrow that you go out for a 62 mile and 1500 climb bike ride fully loaded with 100 pounds of gear. Make sure you turn your A/C off before you leave and keep it off after you get home. Then, if you don't complain, I will stop complaining.

Yes, the heat continues here. The yurt really was a sauna even though we had the top window open and used the mosquito net. I had to get up around 3:30 to use the bathroom which is down the path and in the barn. The most beautiful chicken ever (see yesterday's post) was sleeping outside the bathroom door. It also had left quite a few droppings there so it must be a favorite chicken hangout. The chicken only woke up when I started to open the bathroom door. Must be an old, beautiful chicken. 😁
Tony did a great job today of saving us lots of climb when we got to the Rheinfall. He tied up our bike at the top of the huge hill that you have to take down to get to the Rheinfall. After loving the falls, and while walking back up, we clapped for a German couple on a tandem (without paniers) that were riding up that steep hill from the Rheinfall. We took a break in a city square a little later and shared some of our plums with them.
Sounds like you could really use some headwinds to cool you off ;)
ReplyDeleteI would think you would be so tired not getting enough sleep.
